¿Qué es un espacio confinado? Un espacio confinado es un lugar de dimensiones reducidas y de difícil acceso –con medios limitados para entrar y salir–. Por ejemplo, habitáculos a los que se accede por escaleras, escalerillas o sistemas de elevación con arnés, y que no disponen de ventilación natural, por lo que pueden acumularse contaminantes tóxicos y/o inflamables, o tener una atmósfera deficiente en oxígeno. Además, los espacios confinados no están diseñados para que sus usuarios permanezcan en ellos continuamente, sólo en ciertos trabajos puntuales durante un tiempo limitado. Aunque algunos, sólo algunos, de los espacios confinados corresponden a interiores, es muy común confundir un siniestro en un espacio confinado con un siniestro en un interior.
Los espacios confinados son muchas veces los lugares más peligrosos donde efectúan rescates los bomberos. Desde un punto de vista estadístico, quizá los espacios "domésticos" o de pequeñas obras e instalaciones son los que tristemente registran el mayor número de víctimas, ya sea por falta de formación, ignorancia, escasez de material o por nula experiencia en el trabajo.
Este libro pretende ser una recopilación y ampliación de toda la información, escasa y dispersa, que existe sobre el salvamento en espacios confinados, y una ayuda clara en el trabajo de los cuerpos de rescate, para que se enfrenten a sus tareas y peligros, y desarrollen su labor de la forma más segura y eficaz.
